Mengenal Kuda Laut

Kuda laut merupakan jenis ikan dari genus Hippocampus yang hidup di lautan. Hewan yang jantannya bisa hamil ini berukuran tubuh sekitar 1,5 hingga 35cm tergantung spesiesnya. Mereka bisa dijumpai pada perairan tropis dan menengah di lautan seluruh dunia.

Kuda laut memiliki ciri pada sirip dorsalnya yang terletak pada bagian bawah sedangkan sirip pektoralnya terletak pada bagian kepala pada sekitar dekat insang. Beberapa spesies kuda laut berwarna transparan sebagian, sehingga tidak mudah terlihat.

Selain dijadikan sebagai ikan hias yang dipelihara dalam aquarium air asin, kuda laut juga banyak dimanfaatkan sebagai herbologi tradisional Tiongkok dan sebanyak 20 juta kuda laut pertahun ditangkap untuk keperluan tersebut. Meskipun impor ekspor kuda laut diatur dalam CITES sejak 15 Mei 2004, namun statusnya masih terancam dalam daftar merah IUCN.
